Blacklisted – In SEO terminology, blacklisted refers to being banned from any submission to a particular search engine

Cloaking – A script written in the server of the site to display two versions of the webpage, one is targeted at SE’s spider and another to website’s visitors. The version shown to the visitor is a simplified version so that he understands what it is all about, while the other version is for ranking purpose. It has KW's stuffed in the content as well as title, meta tags etc.

Content – Written part of a website

Copywriting – Writing creative written matter, specially persuasive and informative advertising or sales copy.

Copywriter – A person who does copywriting.

CPC – Cost Per Click, the amount the advertiser pays every time a searcher clicks on his ad’s link.

CPM – Cost Per Impression, number of times an ad is displayed or viewed.

Crawler – Crawler is the software used by spidering and crawling search engines to identify and add pages to its database.

Density – Percentage of keywords on a page

Domain name -Name of the website to be used as the web page address.

H

<H> - Header tag. There are six of them in HTML, <H1> with the largest font size to <H6> with the smallest font size.

Hit - A request for a file from a server.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language.

Hybrid - A search engine having both, a directory component and a crawler based segment within it's database.

Hyperlink - A link, to allow the user to link to other locations within a document or to an external file...see also link...

Index - A search engine's database.

Indexing - Adding pages to a search engine's database.

Keyword - A word a searcher uses to find a product or service.

Keyword density - Percentage of keywords on a page

Keyword nesting - Is the process when, inside a broader keyword term, one keyword or keyword phrase are used.

Keyword phrase - A phrase having two or more words to define a keyword in more detail.

Keyword prominence - The position of a keyword or keyword phrase, where it is used, on a web page. The heigher it is placed the more prominent it is.

Keyword research - The process in SEO of finding the keywords or keyword phrases mostly used to find a product or service.

Keyword stuffing -Using keyword or keyword phrases repeatedly in a misguided attempt to boost ranking.

Keyword weighting - Percentage of keywords on a page

Link popularity - Defined by the number of web pages that link to a particular site.

Link strategy - The method used by a particular site owner to increase the number of inbound links to their pages and boost their site's link popularity.

Link text - The visible text contained within an <A></A> or anchor tag, through which a link is given to other site or page

<META> - An HTML tag placed within the tag that provides information about the page or document.

<META> description - <META> tag used to describe the contents of a page or document.

<META> keyword - <META> tag that indicates the keywords associated with a page or document.

Paid listing - Position provided in a search engine's database for which a fee has been charged.

Portal site - Term used to denote a site offering information on a variety of topics or subjects intended to be of interest to a wide audience.

Position - The position denotes where the site is displayed in the search results for a given keyword or phrase.

PPC - Pay Per Click...revenue model that charges a bid amount to a site in exchange for a listing displayed at a certain position in that engine's results. For a page to hold Position 1 on Overture for a specific keyword or phrase the site owner agrees to pay the current bid amount required to maintain that position. Bid amounts are determined by the number of bidders that wish to hold the position - auction style.

PPI - Pay Per Inclusion...fee charged for a site to be added to a search engine's database. This model is mostly associated with Directories but is also used by spidering engines...for example Inktomi...prominence The placing of keywords at the beginning of a tag or the top of a page. The closer the keywords are to the front of the tag or the higher they are displayed on the page the more prominent they are considered to be in relation to the rest of the page's text.

Relevance - The degree to which a web page satisfies a search query.

Robot - The software used to collect information for the search engine's database.

ROI - Return on investment.

Search engine optimizing - Optimizing a site for relevant KW’s so that it appears at a good position when the keywords are searched.

Search engine placement - Another term for search engine optimizing.

Search engine positioning - Another term for search engine optimizing.

Search engine ranking - Position held by a web page in a search engine's results for a specific search query.

Search engine results - Pages returned by a search engine in response to a specific search query.

Search query - Word or phrase entered in a search box on a search engine site in order to retrieve specific information.

SEO - Acronym for search engine optimization.

Site depth The number of pages contained within a web site.

Source code - The HTML code behind a web page.

Spam - Term used on the web to denote unethical marketing practices.

Spider - Another name for the software used by a search engine to collect data.

<STYLE> - HTML tag contained in the <HEAD> area that defines a particular set of parameters to be applied to a web page's contents.

Submitting - Process of requesting that a search engine add your web site to its database.

Surfer - A person using the web.

Target market - The customers interested in the type of product or service you offer.

Targeted traffic - Visitors to your web site that are interested in your particular product or service.

Traffic - The number of visitors to a web site.

Tweaking - Making minor adjustments to your web pages to improve ranking.

Unique visitor - A visitor to a web site that has not been to that site before.

URL - Uniform resource locator - web address.

Visible text - The text on a web page visible to the human eye.

Web browser - Software program used to access the world wide web. Usually either Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape Navigator.

Web design - Process of creating a web site.

Webmaster Person that maintains or manages a web site.

Web page - Page written in HTML that is part of a web site.

Web positioning - The process of optimizing a web page.

Web site - A collection of web pages owned by a person or company that wishes to have an online presence.
